5 Things To Ask Your Insurance Company

We know that sometimes insurance can be complicated. It is sometimes hard to work out what you are paying for and who will give you the best service for your money.  When shopping for insurance it seems many people look at the cost of premiums and that is all, however there is more to look at than just the cost. What are you actually getting for your money and if you do have an accident is the insurance you have going to look after you and your vehicle as well as you would like? Below are a number of questions you might like to think about when insuring vehicle.

1. Can I choose my repairer?

Many insurance companies will inform you, on making a claim that you will need to have your repairs completed at a particular shop, or at least one of their approved or preferred repairers. Therefore it is good to know BEFORE making a claim what their requirements are. If you have a preferred repairer that you wish to take your vehicle to let them know this and your reasons for wanting to take your vehicle there so they understand this is a priority for you.

2. How much is my excess?

It is good to know how much your excess is BEFORE making a claim. Insurance companies do increase excesses and despite the fact they are obliged to notify you of such increases, let’s face it, do you read every letter you get about insurance?

3. Do I have hire car cover?

You all know how frustrating it is when your car is off the road, whether it’s for a day or a week. No matter the kind of repairs your vehicle requires, it will be off the road at some stage. If you are someone who cannot go without a set of wheels for work or play it may be a good idea to check with your insurance company BEFORE you have an accident if your policy includes hire car cover. Some insurance companies have hire car cover that can be added as an extra onto your policy for a minimal fee, sometimes outweighing the cost of a standard hire car if you will require one during repairs.

4. How many quotes will I need to get?

Some insurance companies require you to get more than one quote. This means you will need to spend your time travelling around shops getting quotes for the repairs and the insurance company will request that you take your vehicle to the cheapest repairer. Often people don’t know that they may be required to do this and it can sometimes be avoided if you specify your preferred repairer when making a claim.

5. If my vehicle needs new parts after an accident, will my insurer pay for original manufacturer parts?

Some insurance companies guarantee “original equipment manufacturer” parts while others will pay only for aftermarket parts. Aftermarket parts are made by another manufacturer, for example parts to fit a Ford that are not made by Ford. To some people it really doesn’t matter, but to some people it does. It is worth thinking about whether this is important to you.
